Our Purpose, Goals & Values – Learning to Learn
At Longthorpe, our vision is to empower children to ‘Learn to Learn’ effectively, simultaneously developing resilience through productive struggle as they become increasingly aware of themselves as learners. As part of the learning journey they will encounter opportunities to think critically and creatively and collaborate with others. Our children will develop an understanding of the correlation between effort and results, value continual development of themselves and embrace learning that puts them in ‘The Pit’.
Our learners will contribute to improving the world at differing levels developing into empathic, global citizens, who collaborate effectively through strong communication skills that will enable them to share and deepen their understanding around real world issues, with the hope of making it a better place.
Learning, particularly that of Foundation subjects, is facilitated through a ‘Learning to Learn’ approach that incorporates relevant questions of inquiry and the 6Cs (Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Critical and Creative thinking), attributes and skills that will help to prepare them for their futures.
Children at Longthorpe will become adept at leveraging technology to enhance and share their learning with others, both in and beyond the school. They will develop their use of technology to enable global collaboration to enrich their learning experiences and curiosity.
Our children will be effective learners; articulate, literate and numerate. They will be confident, independent thinkers who have a good sense of self-worth and belief in their own capacity to succeed. They will take risks with their learning so the fear of failure does not limit their learning capacity.
Children at Longthorpe will develop a strong sense of responsibility for their own learning, holding high aspirations of themselves, their achievements and futures. They will be effective collaborators with a good range of communication and leadership skills, giving them the ability to clearly articulate their ideas and emotions, as well as consider those of others.
A strong home school partnership is integral to your child’s success and is highly valued; we encourage parents to take an active part in their children’s education and we provide opportunities for this. We aim to provide all children with a safe, happy and nurturing learning environment, as well as support parents/carers with ways to help their children improve at home.
We hope the website gives you a good taster of what happens at Longthorpe. We also encourage visits to school and teachers provide many opportunities throughout the year to share and celebrate learning with your children, so you can see the bigger picture, experience the ‘learning buzz’ and see for yourself what a great place Longthorpe is for children to learn.
We look forward to working with you to ensure your children receive a high quality education that prepares them for the next step in their learning journey.
Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
