Parent Governor Election

17 May 2024

Dear Parent/Carer,

Parent Governor Election

I am writing to you to invite you to stand for election as a parent governor. At Longthorpe School we have provision for two parent governors and there are currently two vacancies. The term of office for a parent governor is four years (although a governor can resign from office at any time).

Academy Committees within the Peterborough Keys Academies Trust have three core strategic functions:

  1. Carrying forward the vision, values, ethos and strategic direction of the school, which is in line with the Trust’s vision and strategic plan;
  2. Holding senior leaders to account for the educational performance of the school;
  3. Ensuring the voices of stakeholders are heard.

No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active part in the Academy Committee’s work. However, we would particularly welcome nominations from parents with skills in the following areas: education, business, finance, marketing & legal.

Training is available free of charge for all governors and there is an expectation that those new to being a governor attend induction training, and that all governors undertake safeguarding training regularly.

The enclosed sheet summarises the circumstances under which someone cannot serve as a governor.  Please be aware that no governor can take up office without first having obtained a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate through the school.

Nominations must be from parents or carers with children at the school on the first day of the elections which will be Monday 17th June.

If you would like to stand for election, please complete the online form (link below) by 4pm on Friday 7th June. Please also include a short personal statement to support your nomination, which should be no longer than 250 words. Please note that nominations must be from parents or carers with children at the school.

If there are more nominations than vacancies, the election will be by secret ballot. If that is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the ballot procedure. If elected, you will be asked to complete a Governor Information Form (including declaration) and to participate in an induction process.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs K Trethewy
